Concentration, co-operation and competition:
challenges within Asian airport retailing

Paul Freathy

Introduction

Airport retailing represents a dynamic, yet relatively under researched area of academic study. In recent years the market has undergone significant change as political, economic and social factors have reconfigured the structure of the industry. The changes that have occurred have important consequences for a number of countries within Asia. The aim of this paper will be to detail the nature of these changes, the primary drivers behind their development and the reaction of individual companies to their occurrence.

In order to achieve this, the paper will be divided as follows. First, a brief overview of airport retailing will be provided. Secondly the paper will highlight the main drivers of change within the industry before the third section considers the implications this change has for airports in the Asian region. The fourth section examines the responses from Asian companies and draws a series of conclusions.
